Battery Safes for Lithium-Ion Storage & Fire Protection

As a business if you use, store, charge or transport lithium-ion batteries – such as those in transport and logistics, facilities with electric transportation, industrial and manufacturing, military and emergency services, retailers, constructions, renewables and more; then it’s not just recommended that you invest in the correct storage for batteries, it is essential.

Why is the correct storage of lithium-ion batteries so important?

Lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries require specific storage and safe solutions because they can be particularly volatile if damaged, over-charged or exposed to heat. The correct battery storage and safe solution can help protect the batteries from potential hazards such as fire, explosions or leakage in the first place; as well as protecting staff and property, meet HSE and insurer guidelines and prevent costly downtime and stock loss.

Manufactured with fire-resistant materials, safes designed specifically to store batteries ensure that even if a battery were to overheat or fail, the risk of fire spreading is minimised. Additionally, a battery safe often features compartments to keep batteries organised and prevent short-circuiting by ensuring they don’t touch each other. You can view our range of battery safes below.

Who Needs a Battery Safe?

If your business stores or charges lithium-ion batteries, a fire rated battery safe is now considered best practice, and in many cases a requirement to achieve compliance. The below is a list of the types of businesses and sectors that commonly store, use and charge lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion Battery Storage FAQs

We know that understanding what battery safe you need can be complex. Below we have answered some useful FAQs about lithium-ion battery storage to help you.

If we have covered your question below, please feel free to call us on 0117 967 4994.

You can safely store lithium-ion batteries indoors if the right safety precautions are taken.

As one of the most significant risks posed by lithium-ion batteries is fire or explosion, then it is recommended that they are stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area, ideally within a fire-rated battery storage safe.

For businesses that hold larger quantities of batteries, it is strongly advised to use dedicated lithium-ion storage units.

Even though there isn’t currently a single piece of legislation dedicated to lithium-ion battery storage, there are several UK health and safety regulations that apply.

Businesses are expected to carry out risk assessments, store batteries in fire-resistant enclosures, maintain clear segregation and ensure staff are correctly trained.

Using fire-rated battery safes and cabinets helps demonstrate compliance and provides a practical way to meet insurer and HSE expectations.

This is an option if you select a battery safe specifically design for charging applications.

Thornhill supply specialist battery safes with integrated ventilation and charging ports, designed to safely manage the heat and gases that may occur during charging.

Battery storage safes are typically fire-tested to industrial standards to contain heat, flames, and smoke in the event of a battery failure.

Depending on the model, Thornhill’s range includes safes with:

  • 30 to 90 minutes of fire protection,
  • Fire insulation and heat-resistant seals, and
  • Internal compartments that prevent fire spread between batteries.

Fire ratings are verified under EN 14470-1 or equivalent fire safety standards, giving you confidence that the safe has been independently tested for lithium-ion applications.

If you’re unsure which rating you need, our team can recommend the most appropriate model for your environment and risk level.

Choosing the right battery safe depends on what type of batteries you store, how many and whether you charge them. Consider:

  • Capacity – number and size of batteries (e.g. small tool packs vs e-bike batteries).
  • Fire rating – how long the safe needs to contain a fire (30, 60, or 90 minutes).
  • Ventilation and charging – whether you need a passive storage safe or a model with charging capability.
  • Location and installation – ensure the safe fits the space and can be anchored securely.

If in doubt, speak to the Thornhill team for tailored advice — we’ll help you find the right fire-rated lithium-ion battery storage safe for your specific workplace or application.
