When a local school in Bristol approached our team at Thornhill Security, they were facing ongoing issues with their existing locking system. It was unreliable, confusing for staff and left several areas of the school less secure than they should have been.
The management team wanted a more user-friendly, secure and controlled system that would simplify access for staff whilst protecting pupils and valuable equipment.
Thornhill Security designed and implemented a Master Key System for schools that was tailored to the school’s layout and operational needs.
Understanding the Needs of the School
The school were in urgent need of a modern, efficient locking solution that would:
- Improve overall security across multiple buildings and departments.
- Simplify key management for staff and caretakers.
- Restrict access to certain areas based on role or department.
- Allow for quick, safe locking of classrooms in emergencies.
- Provide a long-term, easy-to-manage system that could be expanded as the school needed.
Their existing set-up had become difficult to manage, with too many separate keys in circulation and limited control over who could access which areas.
This posed both security and safeguarding challenges, which in an educational environment is paramount for pupil safety.
Our Solution
After initial contact, our team conducted a detailed site assessment and consultation with the Head Teacher and Caretaker. Following this Thornhill Security designed a master key system operating on six levels of access control.
How the system works:
- Head Teacher and Caretaker: Hold master keys that open all doors and padlocks across the site, ensuring full access when needed and saving significant time sourcing the right key for the right door.
- Heads of Department: Have keys that open every door within their department, such as the Science Block, but not other areas of the school.
- Teaching Staff: Each teacher’s key opens their own classroom and shared communal areas, but not other departments.
- Common Entry Doors: All authorised keys can open main entry doors for convenience.
- Safety Considerations: Classroom doors feature an internal thumbturn for rapid locking during emergencies, ensuring staff can secure rooms without searching for keys. Where necessary, “classroom lock” mechanisms were installed to prevent misuse of the thumbturn from inside the room.
The intelligent master key system solution provides the school and senior staff complete control over permissions while improving ease of use for day-to-day operations.
How a New Master Key System has Benefitted the School
The new Master Key System has transformed how the school manages security and access. The key benefits include:
- Improved security
- Simplified key management
- Enhanced safeguarding
- User-friendly operation for all staff
- Greater control for management
Since installation, the school has reporting smoother daily operations, less confusion among staff about key usage and peace of mind knowing that security and safety have been significantly strengthened.
