Case Study : Accessibility Upgrade for External Door

Improving Safety and Compliance

Accessibility Upgrade for Internal Door 1A client approached Thornhill Security with a request to improve visibility and safety on an external door that was originally an inward opening, solid door and a half, without a vision panel. This design meant users on either side of the door had no visibility of each other, creating a potential hazard.

Solution:
• We advised that adding a vision panel to the existing door would not bring it up to current standards, as the door wouldn’t meet DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) requirements and also failed to comply with fire regulations due to its inward opening design.
• We recommended replacing it with a new outward opening steel security door.
• The new door featured two vision panels – including a lower panel to ensure visibility for wheelchair users – and a DDA-compliant threshold.
• We also suggested fitting a “push to exit” mechanism on the inside for easy and safe egress.

Outcome:
The client was pleased with the result. Their new door offered improved safety, full compliance with accessibility and fire regulations, and provided better visibility for all users, including those in wheelchairs.
